Kara’s dedication to LLS is not just about volunteering and giving back to the community—it’s deeply personal. Having faced her own battle with cancer, she understands firsthand the emotional and physical toll that comes with such a diagnosis. This perspective allows her to connect with others on a profound level, offering guidance and a deep sense of empathy. By sharing her experiences, Kara helps newly diagnosed patients and their families find strength in their journey, reminding them that they are not alone.
Her work aligns seamlessly with Access Global Group’s Family First culture, as many of our team members and their loved ones have been impacted by cancer. Supporting others during such a critical time is not only a meaningful way to give back, it reflects our shared values of care, community, and resilience.
LLS: Transforming Research, Treatment, and Support
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was founded in 1949 by Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers, who were devastated by the loss of their son, Robbie, to leukemia. At a time when blood cancers were almost always fatal, they were determined to change the future of cancer treatment.
What started as a small organization with a handful of volunteers has now become the world’s largest nonprofit dedicated to funding blood cancer research and supporting patients. Since its inception, LLS has invested nearly $1.8 billion into groundbreaking research, helping to advance 70% of the blood cancer treatment options approved by the FDA since 2017. Their commitment to patient support, advocacy, and education continues to transform lives every day.
How LLS Volunteers Make a Difference
LLS offers a variety of volunteer opportunities, empowering individuals like Kara to create meaningful change in their communities. Some of the ways volunteers contribute include:
Mission Volunteers: Providing direct support to patients and caregivers.
Campaign Volunteers: Raising awareness and funds through community programs and fundraising events.
Leadership Volunteers: Advocating for LLS at a higher level and connecting with key stakeholders.
Community Volunteers: Assisting with administrative projects, IT needs, and event planning.
Advocacy Volunteers: Working with policymakers to push for better access to treatments and support services.
Through these roles, LLS volunteers are at the forefront of the fight against blood cancers, ensuring that patients receive the care and support they need to confidently face their diagnoses.
The Heart of Volunteerism: Kara’s Impact
Kara’s role on the Newly Diagnosed Cancer Counsel Team exemplifies the essence of volunteerism—offering time, energy, and heart to those in need. For newly diagnosed patients, the fear of the unknown can be overwhelming.
