In this landscape of uncertainty emerges Kesem, a touchstone of hope and healing for children navigating the turbulent waters of a parent’s cancer journey. More than a nonprofit organization, Kesem represents a movement born of compassion and sustained by dedication, ensuring that no child walks this difficult path alone.
At its core, Kesem embodies the belief that every child deserves to experience joy and find strength in community, even amid life’s darkest challenges. Through free, accessible programs and comprehensive support services, they create spaces where children can be children again—where worry gives way to wonder, and isolation transforms into belonging.
The History of Kesem
Kesem’s story began in 2000, when a group of Stanford University students sought to address an unmet need in the cancer care landscape: support for children whose parents were battling cancer. The founders envisioned a place where children could experience the joys of childhood while receiving emotional support tailored to their unique circumstances.
From its humble beginnings at a single university campus, Kesem has grown into a national network of more than 4,700 volunteer college student leaders at over 115 college chapters across the country. They provide year-round programs and services at no cost to thousands of children and families annually–delivering on their mission to provide enduring support.
Kesem’s Mission
Kesem’s mission is both simple and profound: to offer free, immersive programs for children impacted by a parent’s cancer. At the heart of this mission lies Camp Kesem, a magical, week-long summer camp designed to let kids simply be kids. Through team-building activities, art, and outdoor adventures, campers build friendships and gain confidence in a supportive, judgment-free environment.
This work has never been more critical. Across the United States, 5 million children are coping with a parent’s cancer diagnosis—a reality that often brings increased anxiety, emotional isolation, and feelings of hopelessness. For these children, Kesem is a lifeline, providing a nurturing community that helps them heal, grow, and thrive.

How Kesem Works
Kesem’s impact is driven by a powerful network of college student leaders who dedicate themselves to fundraising, organizing, and leading camp sessions. Recruited from campuses nationwide, these talented and committed volunteers manage nearly every aspect of their local chapters. From planning Camp Kesem to delivering year-round support for families, these student leaders create truly one-of-a-kind programs that meet the needs of children in their communities.
With oversight and guidance from Kesem, student volunteers receive ongoing leadership development training, empowering them to recruit and train additional volunteers, facilitate outreach efforts, and fundraise to keep Kesem’s transformative programs free of charge. Their dedication ensures that every camper experiences a safe and nurturing environment where they feel seen, heard, and supported.
The Kesem spirit proves impossible to leave behind even after graduation. Alumni carry their flame forward, returning to mentor new leaders, share hard-won wisdom, and champion the cause that first captured their hearts. This endless circle of giving back weaves an ever-expanding network of support, ensuring that future generations of children will always find strength and solace in Kesem’s embrace.

For Kara, an Access Global Group (AGG) employee, Kesem’s mission is more than an inspiring story—it’s a deeply personal commitment. This past year, Kara had the honor of serving on Kesem’s Board of Directors, where she played an instrumental role in advancing the organization’s impact on children and families.
“As a Board Member, I contributed to fundraising initiatives, community outreach, and key projects aimed at enhancing Kesem’s reach,” Kara shared. “A highlight of my year was serving as the Keynote Speaker at Kesem’s Annual Gala, where I helped inspire others to join our mission.”
Kara’s passion for Kesem shines through in every aspect of her involvement, from advocating for families to building meaningful connections at meet-and-greet events. Her dedication mirrors Kesem’s values of community, compassion, and empowerment, embodying the very spirit of the organization.
“Kara’s contributions to Kesem exemplify the power of grassroots support,” said one of her colleagues. “Her work inspires all of us at AGG to engage more deeply with causes that matter–causes that make a real difference.”
